I wanted to let everyone know that after a couple days of hospitalization, Traveller lost his fight. He passed away Saturday morning.
Due to his weakened condition, not much testing could be done. But Dr. Eckermann-Ross did do what she called a "standing x-ray" - no sedation, just a quick picture to hopefully give a clue to what was causing this sudden illness. She found that his cardiac and hepatic silhouette was much larger than normal, so it appears he may have been in heart failure. Sadly, in birds, by the time symptoms appear, it's often very late in the disease.
Judging by several things, Traveller was not a young bird. We have no way of knowing his true age, as he was a 'found' bird and thus had no way to give us his history. Based on his medical findings, we suspect he was an older gentleman.
He was one of the sweetest cockatiels I have ever met. I will miss him.
I will be picking up his remains and making arrangements for the bill (which is probably going to be a hefty one) on Monday. He will go to Agape Pet Services to join the rest of our "Littles" who have left Marden's Ark for a better place. Fly free, sweet little guy. ...
